EXHIBITION STATEMENT

Along the Cimarron is a group exhibition co-curated by Liz Dueck and James Ratterree. Work will include drawing, painting, photography, Land Art, sculpture and audio from the following Oklahoman artists whose work focuses on landscape and wildlife native to their state: Kayla Anley, Rachel Rector, Liz Dueck, Joseph Mohmed & James Ratterree. Although the work is diverse, the similar subject matter and shared nature experiences root these artists together to create a unified show that gives voice to the natural environments along the Cimarron River.

The Cimarron River begins in Northeast New Mexico, runs through the Oklahoma panhandle, dipping slightly into Colorado and Kansas before freely flowing for almost 700 miles across Oklahoma until it merges with the Arkansas River forming Keystone Lake. The art will cover the eco-regions of the Western High Plains and the Southwest Tablelands in the Panhandle as well as the Central Great Plains and the Cross Timbers Ecoregion of Oklahoma.

Exploration and collaboration are major themes in this exhibition. As the starting point to this project, the artists gathered for a weekend-long camping Artist Retreat on private land in Coyle, Oklahoma that is next to the Cimarron River. This Artist Retreat offers us the chance to collaborate with each other as well as the surrounding nature; allowing us to form deeper connections with the land through the art-making process. Artists were encouraged to challenge their regular studio practices, and reflect on how creating in nature influences their work.

Along the Cimarron captures the natural life of the Cimarron River emotionally and viscerally through a range of visual and audio work and communicates the unique personal experiences the artists had while creating in nature. We show our gratitude to the land we have gotten to learn more deeply about through the process of this show.

Special acknowledgment to Gary Spencer, who owns and takes care of the land in Coyle, OK where the Artist Retreat was held.

This project is supported in part by the Oklahoma Visual Arts Coalition, through their Grants for Artists program.
